Small group personal training or 1-2-1 training?

Ray is working on a 1-2-1 session with a client. Would you benefit from this or small group personal training?

Small group personal training has been growing in popularity in the past few years. People are looking for the same camaraderie and social aspects as traditional exercise classes. However, often find that large classes don’t tailor to their specific goals. As a result, they aren’t seeing much progress and many have found that small group personal training is more suited to them.

So what is the difference between 1-2-1 personal training and small group personal training? Is one better than the other? Read below for the benefits of each form of personal training and a comparison of the two.

Small Group Personal Training

The benefits

  • You can train with friends, family members or your partner and make it a fun activity to do together. Especially if you are someone who hasn’t found exercise that enjoyable before, this can be a great way to have a laugh while still putting in the work.
  • On that note, you can keep each other accountable. This might also have been something that you have struggled with in the past – starting to workout but not having the accountability that you need. You can share in the highs of seeing each other’s progress but also keep each other motivated on days you’re finding it hard to get motivated yourself.
  • Another great reason to choose small group personal training is that you can spread the cost between you. This makes it a much more affordable way to still access a very personal service.
  • As long as your group has similar goals, you can all still be following an appropriate programme. This allows everyone to achieve the results they’re looking for.
  • You still get individualised coaching on technique and form so you can be confident that you are completing each movement in the safest and most efficient way – getting the absolute most out of your session.
  • Personally, I also offer nutrition and lifestyle coaching alongside these small group training programmes and this coaching is still offered 1-2-1 even though the training is held in small groups. So if this is something that you do need assistance with, you will still receive the personal service and advice.

1-2-1 Personal Training

The benefits

  • Your training programme is completely tailored to you, your goals, abilities and schedule. It is literally designed for you. So if you’re looking to get serious about working towards your goals, then this is the service for you
  • You get 100% of your personal trainer’s attention during sessions, you are their sole focus. This means they can push you harder, work on your technique so you have it down to a fine art and get the absolute most out of every rep and you can communicate with them more. You can discuss in more detail how the each exercise feels, any way you feel you may be limited and so on. You might not have time for all this in a small group.
  • You literally cannot hide! Within a small group, you may be able to coast along and hide that little bit more. But when it is just you, it is ALL on you. You put in the work, noone else.

So, which one is for you?

The answer is, it depends where you are currently with your training, and also what you want to be training for. If you are training mainly for overall health and are interested in the social aspect, then small group personal training is for you. If you are wanting to ease yourself into exercise in a fun environment, then again, small group personal training could be perfect for you.

However, if you feel like you need the extra push and are ready to get very serious about your health and fitness, then I would say 1-2-1 is for you. Or if you have specific goals you would like to make solid progress towards such as training for an event, losing body fat or building muscle, then again 1-2-1 sessions might be best for you.

Of course, you might not fit neatly into the examples above and might be torn by which way to go. I offer both forms of personal training in Manchester city centre and am always up for a chat if you are thinking about getting into training. We can sit down for a non-obligation brew and have a chat about what might be best for you right now.
